Close wins for Yodas and Mercury

The Yodas continued their impressive season with another win. The game opened as a cagey affair with few opportunities for either team, though both keepers each made one excellent save late in the first half. The Yoda's came out for the second half hungry to score, with Turner Weinmeister, in particular, a seemingly unstoppable force. He made run after run and cross after cross tearing down the left of the CMSC defense. It seemed only a matter of time before they would take the lead. Somewhat surprisingly, the goal would come from the right. Lief Cedgeren opened the scoring on 41 minutes. Though he was fouled early in the move and well inside his own box, the ref played an advantage as the ball came to the feet of Max Smoker, who brought the ball up the field and crossed to Lief's feet near the penalty mark. He needed no further invitation, and left the net rippling.
Unfortunately, as the old adage goes, you're never more vulnerable than when you've just scored. The goal was as route one as you can get, a long ball the Yoda defense let bounce, and the strong CMSC forward muscled off two defenders before slotting the ball home on 44.
It would be late in the half before the winner came. As the referee checked his watch, the ball deflected into the path of Lief, again on the right. This time, he would need no help--he dribbled from the halfway line, beating two defenders with speed, and, just when the move looked dead, he used his magic feet to evade two more on the edge of the penalty box. He powered home and left CMSC scrambling for an equalizer. It would not come, as the Yodas ended the game by putting every player behind the ball for the final minutes. The bus well and truly parked, the blew his whistle to the delight of the green side of the field.

The U14 Mercury improved to 6-1 with a solid comeback performance versus Asheville's HFC on their home turf. Mercury allowed two goals early but gained their defensive footing about 25 minutes into the first half to give the offense some space to go to work.  Mikey Hoffman scored his first just minutes into the second half, and a few minutes later he caught the keeper off his line for the equalizer.  Credit for the assist on Hoffman's second goes to keeper Bryan Romero.  The game was even until late when Jack Weinmeister threaded the ball through three HFC defenders to get a clear line on the back of the net.  Mercury's exceptional team effort fended off fierce pressure from HFC throughout the second half.  Mercury is the only coed team in the Western North Carolina Boys Challenge League and remains in first place with one regular season game remaining.
