Positive weekend for YCYL
Saturday saw the Yodas lose to what may be their bogey team. In fact their only two league losses this year have come from this HFC PSV team. Though play seemed evenly matched in the early stages, PSV scored two well worked goals just before the break. The Yodas seemed to come out the stronger team in the second half, and they got their reward when Max Smoker chipped the PSV keeper from 20 yards at a tight angle. Unfortunately, the Yodas were unable to create many chances against a well drilled defense, nor could they capitalize on the few they got. PSV saw the game out by scoring two more from corner kicks late in the half. At 4-1 with just a few minutes left, PSV shut up shop and saw the game out, ;eaving the Yodas frustrated.
If there was any lingering emotion from the loss, the Yodas were able to quickly displace it after running out 1-3 winners over HFC's Real Madrid team. Again, it was a cagey start with neither team producing any clear cut chances and only few weak shots on goal and a further few opportunities lost from poor crosses. A flurry of activity as the half came to a close saw both keepers making fine saves before the Yodas opened scoring on 27 minutes. Max's long punt from his own penalty area left the Real defense at sixes and sevens, and Colby latched on to the bouncing ball deep in the opposition half. He made no mistake 1v1 on the keeper and fired home from ten yards. The Yodas, though, were unable to keep the advantage for long. Real's #82, seemingly trying to better Max's goal from Saturday, chipped the Yoda keeper from 25 yards at a similar angle right on the stroke of half-time. The Yodas, again, started the second half the better of the two teams. This time, though, there would be no mistake. Real found it hard going against this resilient defense, and were unable to find a clear shot on goal--though keeper Vaughn Smoker might count himself lucky to have not given away a penalty after taking out an onrushing attacker as the ball was played in behind. As the Yodas improved their crossing while the half wore on, they were able to create some more chances and alarm bells would have been ringing in the Real defense as several Yoda shots were saved or missed the target by small margins. On 47 minutes, the Yodas found the net. A fine run from midfield resulted in Turner Weinmeister's cross from the left to Max Smoker, who powered home from 8 yards. 1-2 Yodas. They were able to double their advantage at the death after a similar play by Ben Tomcho to cut back to Lief Cedergren, who, after some fancy footwork took out two defenders, beat the keeper from ten yards.
U14 Mercury won on Saturday in Waynesville versus CMSC 8-1. They opened playing a 4-2-1 counterattack formation since the availability of subs was questionable with a number of players out or sick. Jack Weinmeister opened the scoring and followed closely with a second. Diego Gutierrez ensured Mercury were ahead 3-0 at the half with his solid one v one effort versus the opposing keeper. Readjusting their defense at halftime, CMSC took advantage of a nice penetrating pass to get one back for the home team. A few minutes later Mercury adjusted their formation to the more familiar 3-3-1 and the game unravelled for their opponents. Jack Lee scored before and after Mikey Hoffman's goal. Denali Berry ripped one in into the upper left corner from 25 yards, and Izzy Davis finished Mercury's scoring with a near post tap-in just before the keeper could get his hands on the ball. Yancey County's Mercury are in
1st place in Western North Carolina Challenge Soccer's U14 league with a record of 5-1 and a goal differential of 20.
